Октябренок
The appearance of this little pin pricked my memories of Russia--not the glitzy, euro-trash Moscow we left behind in January, but the post-communist Russia of my first stay there, in `93.
I bought it, a momento of the communist "Pioneer" youth program, from a stout grandma selling salted cabbage at the neighborhood market. The photo is Lenin as a baby, the "Oktabreyonok"--a cross between the word for October and baby--and I hardly need point out the significance of the red star, right? The original that I brought home that first round was lost or destroyed, and it took us the whole 2 years we were there the second round to find its replacement. Pretty sure we paid more the second time, from the pin-peddling sharks at Izmailovo Vernisazh.
